In Memory

Tim Sweeney

Timothy James Sweeney Timothy James Sweeney age 71, peacefully passed away on May 11, 2018, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sara; daughter, Katie (Aaron) Hackman; son, Brandon Sweeney; sister, Mary Rogge; twin brother, Tom (Jane) Sweeney; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Florence; and brothers: Michael and Daniel.

He grew up in Bloomington, IL, and attended Illinois State University, earning both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education, as well as a Masters degree in School Administration from Governors State University. He spent 34 years at Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL, as a teacher, speech coach, and Fine Arts chairperson, serving as an inspiration to so many students and fellow staff members. He directed many theatrical productions, designed and built many beautiful sets, and consistently saw his students achieve top honors in dramatic and speech competitions at the state and national levels. He sat on the IHSA Advisory Board, worked with the Illinois State Board of Education on standards, assessments, testing, and teacher certification, and sat on the council for the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education. He was a long-time member, one-time President, and Lion of the Year of the Munster Lions Club. He continued to serve as chaplain and song leader, as well as chairing the clubs 75th Anniversary celebration. For many years he coordinated the club's vision and hearing screening programs for preschool children. As an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he served as a Deacon and an Elder, and chaired the Worship & Music committee. His artistic creativity enhanced many projects at the church - the Living Nativity, special occasion sanctuary decorations, themed dinners, and Samaritan Center theatrical productions. He loved singing in the choir.

Music was a true joy in his life, whether he was singing, listening, or playing his violin. The support and love of his church family meant a great deal to him. His faith was strong and never wavered. He loved working in his garden, taking care of his goldfish pond, and beautifying the home that he shared with his family. He was always kind, patient, intellectually curious, mischievously silly, super handy, and creative. He was a great teacher and mentor, musician, dancer, actor, and the most loving friend, son, brother, husband and father anyone could ask for. He was admired by all and will be dearly missed.

A Memorial Service celebrating Tim's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 9th at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Ave, Munster, IN, 46321, Rev. Quincy Worthington officiating. Visitation with the family will take place from 10:00 to 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Tim's memory to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
